Subject

Wolfram Blockchain Labs needed a way to explain blockchain concepts — smart contracts, network roles, data bridges — without leaning on a wall of text. They came to us for a custom icon set that could carry that meaning on its own.

What have we done

  1. Designed a set of 20+ icons covering blockchain concepts — a bank, a data bridge, a wallet, smart contracts, network diagrams, a fingerprint, a rocket and more.
  2. Took each icon from pencil sketch through to a clean, consistent vector, so the whole set reads as one system rather than a collection of one-off drawings.
  3. Applied the set across WBL’s own materials, including a document template with the brand name spelled out in hex as a nerdy signature touch.

Task

Blockchain concepts are abstract by nature — the challenge was making each one instantly legible as a small, simple icon, while keeping every icon in the set visually related to the others.

Solution

We worked out each concept in pencil first, refining the metaphor before touching a vector tool, then built every icon on the same grid, stroke weight and green outline style so the set holds together as a single visual language.

Pencil sketches of the WBL icons on paper — hexagonal network, drop and node-graph concepts before they were drawn as vectorsPencil sketches of the WBL icons on paper — hexagonal network, drop and node-graph concepts before they were drawn as vectors

Sketching first kept the focus on whether an idea actually reads at icon size, before any time went into polishing a vector that might not survive the concept stage.

Green document cards with WBL icon badges, each reading “57 6F 6C 66 72 61 6D 20 42 6C 6F 63 6B 63 68 61 69 6E 20 4C 61 62 73 0A” — “Wolfram Blockchain Labs” in hexGreen document cards with WBL icon badges, each reading “57 6F 6C 66 72 61 6D 20 42 6C 6F 63 6B 63 68 61 69 6E 20 4C 61 62 73 0A” — “Wolfram Blockchain Labs” in hex

The hex-encoded brand name on the document template is a small detail most people will never decode — exactly the kind of touch a technical audience notices and appreciates.

The result is a set WBL can keep reusing across decks, docs and the product itself, instead of commissioning a new icon every time a new concept needs explaining.
